Staying on Track: How to Beat the Bulge at Christmas

The Christmas season is a time for celebration, family, and fun, but it can also be challenging to stick to your exercise routine and avoid overindulging. Between the festive meals, parties, and cozy days indoors, it’s easy to let healthy habits slide. However, with a few smart strategies, you can stay active and maintain balance during the holidays without missing out on the joy of Christmas.

Here are some tips to help you stay on track with your fitness and avoid overindulgence during Christmas:

1. Set Realistic Goals

Christmas is all about enjoying time with loved ones, so it’s important to be realistic about your exercise goals. Instead of aiming for perfection, set achievable targets like:

  • Looking at how much exercise you normally do in a week, and ensuring that you are still doing 1/2 of it. For example if you normally go to class twice a week, make sure you are at least going once a week.

  • Shorter sessions if you’re pressed for time. Sometimes we just don't have time for a full hour session. In my FREE facebook group Wednesday workouts are 10 mins, on my online platform TUP TV there are workouts which are 10 mins, 20 mins, 30 mins, and 1 hour, and the platform is devised so you can pick a workout according to the time that suits you best. I also do a live 30 min Pilates with weights workout on a Wednesday which is perfect for a mid week blast.

Being flexible and realistic will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

2. Schedule Your Workouts

Just like you would schedule holiday events or family gatherings, schedule your workouts. Plan them in advance and block out time in your calendar to prioritise exercise. Knowing when you’ll work out makes it easier to stick to.

3. Incorporate Fun, Festive Activities

Exercise doesn’t always have to mean a gym session! You can stay active by participating in festive activities such as:

  • Going for a family walk after dinner.

  • Ice skating

  • Playing outdoor games with kids.

These activities make exercising feel like part of the fun, rather than a chore.

4. Home Workouts for Flexibility

If you’re traveling or have limited time, home workouts are a great way to stay active. Keep it simple:

  • Do a 30-minute weight workout on Zoom.

  • Do a 20 min Pilates session on TUP TV an online platform that allows you to do a workout, at the time that is right for you .

  • Try short bursts of exercise throughout the day, like 10 minutes here and there, to add up.

This ensures you get moving, even when time is tight.

5. Prioritize Movement, Not Perfection

If you can’t do a full workout, that’s okay! Focus on moving regularly—take the stairs, walk instead of driving, or stretch while watching movies. Staying active throughout the day is just as important as going to a class.

6. Watch Your Portions, Not Your Food Choices

Christmas is a time to indulge in delicious treats, but it’s all about balance. Instead of restricting yourself, try these tips:

  • Smaller portions: Enjoy all the festive foods you love, but stick to smaller servings.

  • Fill up on veggies: At big meals, load your plate with vegetables and lean proteins before diving into heavier, richer foods.

  • Mindful eating: Eat slowly and savor each bite. Pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

This way, you can enjoy your favorite dishes without overdoing it.

7. Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget to drink water during the holiday rush, but staying hydrated is key to feeling energized and avoiding overeating. Often, thirst is mistaken for hunger. Drink water throughout the day, especially before meals and if you’re enjoying cocktails.

8. Limit Alcohol and Sugary Drinks

While it’s tempting to indulge in extra drinks during the holidays, be mindful of alcohol and sugary drinks, as they add extra calories and can lower your willpower. Stick to moderation, alternate with water, and enjoy drinks slowly. Mocktails and festive flavored waters can be fun, refreshing alternatives.

9. Keep the Focus on Connection

The Christmas period is about spending quality time with loved ones, not just food. Shift your focus from food-centric gatherings to activities that involve connection and movement, like walking together, playing games, or simply enjoying a cozy chat by the fire.

10. Don’t Stress About Perfection

Remember, Christmas is a time to enjoy yourself. If you miss a workout or overindulge at a meal, don’t stress. One day won’t derail your progress. Simply get back to your routine the next day and focus on balance rather than being too hard on yourself.

Final Thoughts

With a little planning and a balanced mindset, you can keep up with your exercise routine and avoid overindulgence while still enjoying all that Christmas has to offer. The key is to stay active, be mindful of your choices, and, most importantly, allow yourself to enjoy the season without guilt.
