Muscle knots - have you had one?

I was sat on the couch the other day, having a cuppa, watching the crazy kids, my nephews and my son, charging around, and I scooched forward to get up and POW! A knot formed in my back, out of nowhere. I didn't do anything taxing all I did was shuffle forward. Isn't it annoy when that happens. I haven't had a knot like this in forever. BOO!

Knots normally occur when a small portion of a muscle, tenses up. It can be bloody uncomfortable. ‌Muscle knots can happen for many reasons:

  • Poor posture due to a sedentary lifestyle.

  • Injuries from repetitive motions or heavy lifting.

  • Direct injuries such as blunt force trauma, muscle tears, strain, or breaking.

  • Unaddressed mental health concerns that cause overwhelming amounts of mental or emotional stress.

I am going to presume mine occured due to stress, life is hectic, with a child with special needs and the paperwork that goes with that, which is all consuming, a neighbour with a limited support system, so he needs me to do all his banking and driving everywhere, a business to run so that I can bring home the bacon, and don't forget the wife duties, running a household, oh and making sure that I, as an individual, doesn't go completely insane in the process of life.

Have you had a knot and wondered why they are so painful. I have heard reason such as, the pain occurs due to toxins, or trapped lactic acid, but the one that makes the most sense is the tension in the muscle can put pressure on nerves and cause pain. No matter why there is discomfort we want it to stop, so how do you do that.

  • Massage

    • From a person

    • From a massage gun

    • From a foam roller

    • From a tennis ball

  • Stretching

  • An active lifestyle

Prevention is better than cure, so what can you do to avoid these delightful little monsters from forming.

One of the great things I know since having started my Pilates journey is that injuries or body aches don't scare me anymore. I used to be full of fear and concern that I will be in discomfort and agony for long periods of time, because before Pilates that happened and it was rubbish. I now know that if I keep moving intentionally but with care, I can get back to where I was in a reasonable amount of time.

Do you want to move with control and intention? Why don't you come for a FREE Pilates class
